St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral

The very first American Catholic church built specifically for the Italian-American community, St. Patrick’s was designated a basilica by Pope Benedict in 2010, and is one of the most significant attractions in Little Italy.

Filmmaker Martin Scorsese grew up in Little Italy and many of his movies, including 1973’s Mean Streets starring Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro, are based on his own experiences here. Stroll the streets and meet the local characters who inspired him.

Joseph Petrosino was the first ever Italian-American police sergeant in the NYPD and became a pioneer in the fight against organized crime. He was assassinated in Sicily in 1909. The tour visits some of his old haunts and the places he knew best.
